Accreditation Update

  Thursday, May 26

Dear Churchland Middle School families,

This letter is to inform you of an update regarding the accreditation rating of Churchland Middle School for the 2015-2016 school year.  According to the Virginia Department of Education, “Public schools in Virginia receive an accreditation rating each year based on results of tests given during the previous school year.” As you know, Churchland Middle School received a rating of “Accreditation Denied” by the Virginia Department of Education for this school year.

In March, we provided a Frequently Asked Questions handout and held two family nights to provide detailed information on what this accreditation status means.

This accreditation rating was based on SOL pass rates for the 2014-2015 school year.

Due to the “Accreditation Denied” rating, Portsmouth City School Board has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Virginia Board of Education. The MOU was approved tonight at the School Board Meeting. This plan includes the following essential actions:

VDOE diagnostic visits and proposed essential actions.
Focus on instructional planning.
Improve instructional delivery.
Implement a balanced literacy program.
Implement Positive Behavior Intervention and Support.
Revision of the master schedule.
Analyze student learning data to inform instruction.

We have already put several initiatives in place as we work towards meeting those measures. We are closely monitoring student performance and working strategically to improve teaching and learning and increase overall student achievement.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns, and thank you for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Barbara R. Kimzey
Principal
