Health & Physical Education

The Portsmouth Public School System recognizes that health and physical education play an important role in students' lives. The curriculum guide provides the foundation for the learning experiences which are designed by our health and physical education teachers. A vital outcome of the utilization of this curriculum is to assist in setting a "wellness" mind set for our students.

The guide includes the Standards of Learning from the State Department of Education and local objectives which form the basis for the program that will improve the total fitness of our students. Each student's fitness performance can be measured against the standards set by Virginia's Wellness-Related Fitness Test. The objectives in the guide are supported by instructional materials and activities as well as reference materials developed by the American Alliance for health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

Wellness"For years we have compelled children to exercise. We should realize that it is time to try something different. As professionals, we must recognize  that 'getting children fit' (by itself) is not the answer if young people do not develop the lifetime skills of wellness."
