NAMM Foundation names PPS 2026 Best Communities for Music Education

The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation has named Portsmouth Public Schools (PPS) a Best Communities for Music Education award winner. This award, which was created 27 years ago, “recognizes school districts and individual schools nationwide for their leadership in advancing music education and expanding equitable access for all students,” according to NAMM.

“We know that music education is essential for today’s students,” said PPS Superintendent Dr. Elie Bracy, III. “It nurtures creativity, discipline, collaboration and confidence. As such, we are incredibly proud to be recognized among the best in the nation. This outstanding honor reflects the passion and dedication of our music educators as well as the unwavering support of our community. We will build on this momentum to expand opportunities and ensure music remains a defining strength of our division.”

In order to be selected for the honor, the foundation evaluates a variety of criteria including music education participation rates, teacher qualifications, standards for assessing music education, budget and knowledge of music education electives.

PPS offers a multitude of music programs for student participation at both the elementary and secondary level, including chorus, band, steel pans, orchestra, dance as well as the division’s travel performance ensemble, Porte Towne Magic.
